Appearance
27 years old. 5’11”, 168 lbs — lean, built for movement. Dark brown hair with a silver streak on the left side from the temple; the streak appeared after Maren’s ritual and wasn’t there before. Dark grey eyes. Medium complexion, weathered from travel and military service. A faint hexblood mark runs along the inside of his left wrist — slightly luminescent in low light. He touches it without thinking when working through a problem.
Practical clothing: charcoal, deep green, black. Nothing that catches light. Gets quieter when angry. Instinctively reads exits when entering any room.
Personality
Wound: Trusted a mentor completely — gave them access, time, belief — and that trust was the weapon used against him and everyone he loves. Some of his best instincts came from someone who was using him. He doesn’t fully know which parts of himself are his and which were installed.
Flaw: Paranoia occasionally overrides good judgment. Catches himself using techniques Maren taught and goes cold.
Temptation: Maren can still reach him through dreams. She hasn’t gone quiet. Whatever she wants from what she made, she hasn’t stopped wanting it.
Quirks: Reads exits in every room. Touches the silver streak or his left wrist when thinking. Doesn’t raise his voice — gets quieter when angry, which unnerves people.
Backstory Summary
Vesper grew up in Ashveil, a small village in the County of Mornolace near the border with The Untamed Marches — the kind of place maps mark only vaguely. He served as a soldier, and after leaving military service was approached by Maren Voss — a wandering scholar who turned out to be a hag in disguise. She trained him, sharpened his skills, and at some point performed a ritual that transformed him into a Hexblood without his full understanding of what that meant. The silver streak and the wrist mark appeared afterward.
When a curse began slowly killing Ashveil’s residents, Vesper traced the signs back to Maren. By the time he accepted the truth, she was gone. He left to find a cure — and eventually, answers. He doesn’t yet know if the village was the target or if he was, or what Maren ultimately wanted from what she built.
Maren can still reach him through dreams. She hasn’t stopped.
Goals & Motivations
- Long term: Find the cure for Ashveil’s affliction. Understand the full truth of what Maren did and why.
- Medium term: Find someone with deep knowledge of the curse — a hag, arcanist, or ancient healer. Or find Maren and get answers first.
- Short term: Locate a scholar or hedge mage who can identify the exact nature of the affliction. Pick up Maren’s trail.
